Moving away from cheques

In September Inland Revenue alerted Bradley Accounting that cheques will no longer be accepted as a payment option. This will commence from 1 March 2020.

If you are a cheque user, please consider shifting to one of these alternative payment methods:

  • myIR: Direct debit and card payments can be made from myIR. Visit Inland Revenue’s website ird.govt.nz and login or register for myIR.

  • Online banking: One-off or scheduled recurring payments can be made using online banking. Contact your bank for more information.

  • Money transfer: If you are overseas you can pay the IRD using a money transfer service. Search for “Make a payment” on the IRD website for more information.

  • Credit or debit card via Inland Revenue’s website: Payments can be made by credit or debit card through Inland Revenues website. Go to the IRD website and search for “Make a payment” and select “Pay using credit or debit card”, or visit ird.govt.nz/payments

  • Westpac: EFTPOS or cash payments can be made at any Westpac branch or Smart ATM.

*Charges may apply for some of these options.

If you need help getting started with online banking, check out the free digital banking courses offered by your bank or local community groups.

Inland Revenue has also aligned GST cheque issuing with other products that have migrated to its new system. This means that Inland Revenue has stopped sending GST refund cheques from 25 September 2019 to align with this change.

Inland Revenue may also send this information to you in writing directly if you have paid by cheque in the past.
